If you’re an overweight teenager, chances are you’ve had your share of people picking on you and making fun of you. Kids can be really cruel, and are most unkind about physical appearances. Even something like a fitness and health program can get a bad name, like “fat camp”; for teens, that can be really humiliating.
It’s great when teens can become enthusiastic about health and fitness programs. When they start to see weight coming off and when they start to feel better, it’s easy for them to get excited and start to really commit to the program. However, it’s really difficult getting started on any lifestyle change.
If teens have a chance to go to a camp that can teach them how to change to a healthier lifestyle, and if they can see it as a chance for a positive change, it can be a great way for them to learn a lot of healthy habits.
It’s a difficult world in which to be healthy. There’s too much to do on a couch, like watching 900 channels on satellite television, playing one of hundreds of video games, reading books and magazines, or just “gelling out” from a stressful week at school. And it’s hard to break the habit of junk food. Fast food restaurants are convenient and cheaper than anything else out there, and snack food is all over schools, plus better tasting than most health food.
However, if a teen can get past the initial hurdle of just starting a lifestyle change, then once they start to see results, they should be much more enthusiastic and committed to it.
